Poem: The Gulls of Mytilene

The gulls of Mytilene cry: "Gabrielle is gone."
Oh, that you might have stayed with us
And continued to share the love glowing within you.

The gulls of Mytilene cry: "Gabrielle is gone."
Gone to follow your own true loves.
To follow the Xena we see, straighter than the oaks of Dodona.

No flower to be plucked between eager fingers
To look pretty for a time, then wither.
The beauty of stone and steel is your Xena.

The gulls of Mytilene cry: "Gabrielle is gone."
Gone where your other love seeks you.
Hidden in your heart, hidden even from yourself.

Do you hide from that love lest it take you
To places you thought you had left forever?
No more than you fear Xena will take you where you will not go.

Beloved of Aphrodite and Artemis,
You are no rose that needs a gardener to tend her,
But spring bright as daisies after adversity.

The gulls of Mytilene cry: "Gabrielle is gone."
But the light of your love remains,
So in the end the gulls cry falsely.
